Baking arithmetic, explained

Yeast packet and weight converter

Convert dry yeast between grams, US packets, and approximate teaspoons using the Red Star convention.

Enter your amounts

1 standard US packet = 7 g ≈ 2¼ teaspoons.

How to use the result

Convert the starting unit to grams, then divide by the grams in the target unit. This uses 7 g per packet and 7 ÷ 2.25 g per teaspoon. Teaspoon amounts are approximate; weighing avoids volume-measuring variation.

Worked example

1 standard US packet = 7 g ≈ 2¼ teaspoons.

Before changing the recipe

For its traditional recipes, Red Star permits a 1:1 amount swap between active dry and instant yeast, while handling and rise time can differ. Follow the package and recipe instructions. This tool does not cover fresh yeast, specialized sourdough packets, or another brand’s packet size. It does not calculate how much yeast your recipe needs.
