Use the recipe’s butter weight when it gives grams. For cup-only quantities, this converter uses a named 226 g-per-cup reference. A full US stick is a packaging measure; confirm the wrapper before converting.
One full US stick is ½ cup, or 8 tablespoons. Land O’Lakes lists two full sticks as one cup. Check your wrapper: a half-stick or a block sold elsewhere is not a full US stick.
Why this tool shows 226 g per cup
The shared converter normalizes King Arthur Baking’s chart entry of 113 g per ½ cup to 226 g per cup. You may also see 227 g in recipes, including King Arthur’s own shortbread recipe. Rounded references differ; use the recipe’s stated grams when supplied.
Do not switch from the recipe’s 227 g to this chart’s 226 g merely to make the numbers match. The chart explains its convention; it does not overrule the recipe.

| Amount | Full US sticks | US tablespoons |
|---|---|---|
| ¼ cup | ½ | 4 |
| ½ cup | 1 | 8 |
| 1 cup | 2 | 16 |
These relationships are for conventional solid stick butter. They do not establish the weight of whipped butter, spreadable blends, or every plant-based alternative.
Measure the amount, then follow the method
A quantity conversion and an instruction such as “softened” answer different questions. Weigh the amount the recipe specifies, then prepare it in the state the recipe requests. Use the butter consistency checks or softening methods for that next step.
If your packaging is marked only in grams, use the gram amount directly. If the recipe only names sticks, confirm that it means full US sticks before choosing a reference. Keep a note of the reference if you plan to repeat the bake.
Is a 250 g block one cup?
Using this guide’s 226 g-per-cup record, 250 ÷ 226 = 1.106 cups, approximately 1.11 cups. A 200 g block is about 0.885 cup; two cups are 452 g. These are arithmetic answers using a stated convention, not proof that every recipe intends 226 g.
If a recipe calls for 250 g, weigh 250 g. If it calls for one cup and supplies 227 g, use its 227 g. A larger block is packaging, not an instruction to round the ingredient upward.
